Hosting U-17 World Cup would change face of Indian football: IM Vijayan

Mumbai:  Indian football legend IM Vijayan today said hosting the 2017 Under-17 FIFA World Cup will change the face of Indian football as the event would provide world-class infrastructure in the country.

"It will be good for youngsters. We will get good grounds, get a good combination of youngsters. The infrastructure will improve as they would have to build the required facilities and grounds. Moreover, the profile of India football can increase with more spectators coming at the stadia and watching on television," Vijayan told PTI here.

"Later, we can have other football tournaments on those grounds after the conclusion of the World Cup. It will be a boost to the Indian football. The face of Indian football will change. Football will develop because of this," he added.

The former India captain said the country has many talented players, especially at the junior level and they need the opportunity to perform at a big stage.

"We have many talented youngsters but they are not getting the opportunity. We need to push them otherwise we won't get good players," he said.

The 44-year-old Arjuna awardee also hailed proposed IMG Reliance tournament to be held later this year and said it would help to develop Indian football.

"It will benefit the Indians because players like (David) Beckham, Michael Owen, Kaka would come and they can play with these stars. The interest would be high and Indian players can watch them and learn from them, play against them," he said.

"It would be like what happened in cricket. Good players from other countries and the Indian players played together for a club, and the youngsters would come up. For instance, Sanju Samson, he got the experience to bat against the best fast bowlers. Similarly, in football, the youngsters would get the experience by playing alongside these stars. Indian football will develop because of this," he added.

Vijayan is part of the Indian Football Foundation that aims to create a pool of youngsters trained and oriented to football standards.

In association with the Lions Club of Willingdon Crescent, the academy provides free coaching to talented underprivileged children.

Manchester City sweat over Sergio Aguero's fitness ahead of Barcelona tie

London:  Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini faces a nervous wait to see how long he will be without star striker Sergio Aguero after the Argentine limped off with a hamstring injury in Wednesday's 5-1 win against Tottenham.

Aguero had opened the scoring in the first half at White Hart Lane with his 26th goal of the season, but he was forced to limp off before the interval after pulling up abruptly while chasing the ball.

Speaking at his post-match press conference, Pellegrini said he won't know how serious Aguero's injury is until he is checked out by City's medical staff on Thursday.

Losing the in-form Aguero for a significant period would be a major blow to City's title hopes after Pellegrini's team moved to the top of the table with their win over Spurs.

"We see tomorrow with the doctor," Pellegrini said. "He has an injured hamstring so we will have to see how serious it is.

"We won't have any indications until tomorrow.

"Sergio is a top player but we don't depend on just one player so we hope it's the moment where Stevan Jovetic can play and hope that Sergio can join us again as soon as possible."

Copa del Rey: F.C. Barcelona, Atletico Madrid book semi-final spots

Atletico will travel to the Santiago Bernabeu, where they beat Real 2-1 in last year's final, for the first leg of the semi-final next week with the return to come at the Vicente Calderon the following week.

Madrid: Holders Atletico Madrid set up a mouthwatering Copa del Rey semi-final with city rivals Real Madrid after beating Athletic Bilbao 2-1 on Wednesday to win 3-1 on aggregate.

Barcelona also assured their place in the last four with a 5-1 victory over Levante at the Camp Nou to seal a 9-2 rout on aggregate.

In Bilbao, Aritz Aduriz had powered the hosts into a deserved lead four minutes before half-time and Athletic were only denied a bigger advantage at the break by two outstanding saves from Thibaut Courtois.

However, Atletico regrouped at the break and levelled 10 minutes after the restart when Raul Garcia smashed home Emiliano Insua's cross.

Diego Costa sealed their passage into the last four in the final stages as he slotted home his first goal of 2014 on the counter-attack to inflict Athletic Bilbao's first ever defeat at their San Mames ground, which they have used since the start of the season.

Atletico will travel to the Santiago Bernabeu, where they beat Real 2-1 in last year's final, for the first leg of the semi-final next week with the return to come at the Vicente Calderon the following week.

"In the first 30 minutes we were in control of the tie, if not the match," said Atletico boss Diego Simeone.

"From then until half-time they had a great end to the half, but we came out strong in the second-half and got the goal which gave us confidence and strength."

Simeone's men will now face Real three times in little over three weeks in league and Cup.

However, they are unbeaten in four meetings against Madrid and Barcelona this season and the Argentine feels his side now believe they can compete with Spain's big two.

"This season we will play four more games against Barcelona and Real Madrid and that is good because it tests you more, but you also lose the fear of playing in those games."

Barcelona's passage into the semi-finals was far smoother as they thrashed Levante at a sodden and sparsely populated Camp Nou.

Sergi Roberto's early own goal had given the visitors some hope of an improbable comeback from last week's 4-1 defeat.

However, that was quickly extinguished as Adriano's long-range strike and Carles Puyol's thumping header gave Barca the lead on the night before half-time.

Two goals in quick succession after the break from close range by Alexis Sanchez extended the hosts lead.

Cesc Fabregas rounded off the scoring as his low effort beat Javi Jimenez at his near post 21 minutes from time.

Santos denies knowledge of Neymar deal in 2011

Sao Paulo, Brazil:  Brazilian club Santos was never told about a 2011 payment from Barcelona to Neymar's father to guarantee the rights to sign the talented youngster, its president said on Wednesday.

Odilio Rodrigues said the club authorised the player to negotiate with other teams, but nobody ever informed Santos that a deal with Barcelona was reached at the time.

Rodrigues made the comments a day after Neymar's father, who is also the player's agent, said Santos was aware the Spanish club paid his company 10 million euros ($13.3 million) to have the right to sign Neymar.

Another 30 million euros ($41 million) were paid directly to Neymar father's company after the deal was finalised last year.

Santos was paid about 17 million euros ($23 million) in the transfer, but Rodrigues said the club now will try to determine whether it also deserves part of the money given to Neymar and his father. He didn't dismiss legal action against Barcelona and Neymar.

"I always asked Neymar's father if he had received anything from Barcelona and he always denied it," Rodrigues said during a news conference in the coastal city of Santos. "When I was in contact with (former Barcelona president) Sandro Rosell, he also always denied it."

Rosell last week resigned amid allegations he hid the real cost of the deal in false contracts. Brazilian prosecutors said Wednesday they will also investigate whether there were any tax irregularities on the part of the Neymar family in Brazil.

Neymar's father had previously denied to the media that the player received any money from Barcelona before last year's deal was sealed.

He said Tuesday that despite the advanced payment in 2011, Barcelona did not break FIFA rules that prevent teams from luring players under contract with other clubs. He released a document where Santos authorized Neymar to talk to other teams as long as the transfer didn't happen before 2014.

The 2011 deal came just before Barcelona and Santos faced each other in the final of FIFA's Club World Cup that year. Neymar was not a factor in the match and Barcelona won 4-0.

Barcelona said it spent a total of 57 million euros ($78 million) on Neymar. The salary for the 21-year-old striker is 56.7 million euros ($77.5 million) over five years, the club said last week when it offered details on the contract after a Spanish judge agreed to hear a lawsuit brought by a club member alleging irregularities.

Touted as Brazil's biggest star and the player in charge of leading the five-time world champions at the World Cup at home, Neymar rejected a 35 million-euro offer from Chelsea in 2010, and several other teams reportedly tried to sign the young striker after that, including Barcelona rival Real Madrid.

AFC Champions League: Pune FC go down 0-3 to Hanoi T&T FC

Second-half strikes from defender Sam Gallagher, substitute Nguyen Van Quyet and midfielder Hector Vaghaun saw Hanoi through to the next round of the ACL play-offs. Pune FC will now play in Group H of the AFC Cup beginning in February.

Pune:  Pune FC's dream of making it into the AFC Champions League group-stage came to an end after a 0-3 defeat to Vietnamese-side Hanoi T&T FC at the Shree Shivchhatrapati Sports Complex, here on Wednesday.

Second-half strikes from defender Sam Gallagher (52nd minute), substitute Nguyen Van Quyet (71st) and midfielder Hector Vaghaun (83rd) saw Hanoi through to the next round of the ACL play-offs. Pune FC will now play in Group H of the AFC Cup beginning in February.

Pune FC (in red) had the first best chance of the match in the 19th minute after winger Anthony D'Souza managed to get into the clear on the left, he drilled a low shot which the Hanoi keeper Nguyen Van Cong parried away. The rebound, however, fell for Gabriel Fernandes who continued run inside the box. With the ball awkwardly falling for the Goan, he failed to finish from close range.

Minutes later Gabriel's shot from the right was once again blocked by the defence after striker Riga Mustapha sent him in the clear. At the other end, Pune FC custodian Amrinder Singh kept the visitors at bay with two back-to-back saves denying attackers PT Luong and NN Duy. Both sides failed to break the deadlock going into the breather.

The second-half saw Pune FC once again going close in the early exchanges. Medio Arata Izumi saw his cross in from the right cleared followed by Dhanpal Ganesh's low shot straight into the keeper.

Thereafter, Hanoi took charge of the proceedings and scored the opener seven minutes after restart. Australian defender Gallagher jumped the highest inside the box and headed home Thanh Luong's corner in from the left. At the other end, Pune FC kept on pressing ahead in search of the equaliser but were let down by the finishing in the final third.

Midway through the half, the visitors doubled their lead as Pune's defense was caught napping. Hector, clear on the left, did well to chip a cross into the box and Van Quyet, who timed his run to perfection, headed in from close range.

Into the final ten minutes, the visitors scored once more against the run of play. Sent into the clear on the left by Nguyen Hong Tuien, Hector's outside of the boot shot from the left wing ended up in the net on the far side leaving custodian Amrinder Singh helpless.

IFA Shield: East Bengal hold Korean side SunMoon FC 1-1

A second half-half James Moga goal helps East Bengal come from a goal down to hold Busan SunMoon FC in the IFA Shield opener in Kolkata.

Kolkata:  East Bengal survived a jittery first-half before James Moga's late strike from a goalkeeping deflection earned them a 1-1 draw against a spirited Busan SunMoon FC in the IFA Shield opener at the Barasat stadium here on Wednesday.

The fancied red-and-gold brigade were caught unaware early in the sixth minute when Gim Dae Han put SunMoon in the lead as the young outfit acclimatised themselves wonderfully to take the first-half honours.

At the same time, East Bengal were let down by their profligacy with Shylo Malswam Tulunga missing as many as two sitters, while Moga and Edeh Chidi up front were outplayed by their opponents.

The Korean National League side, which is a tier below the K-League, dominated the first-half with some fast-paced dribbling as they showed superb agility.

Midway into the first-half, East Bengal had their best chance when Tulunga's left footer from six yards went over the crosspiece.

But East Bengal were quick to regroup at the break while the Busan outfit showed some signs of lethargy, something that acted in favour of the local outfit.

In a 77th minute move, Lalrindika Ralte's left-sided cross was missed by SunMoon goalkeeper and the ball went to Chidi.

The Nigerian's shot from the right took a deflection from the Korean goalkeeper's hand before Moga gave a subtle finish to save East Bengal the blushes.

International football transfers hit $3.7 billion in 2013

The value of the international player transfer market jumped by 41 percent to $3.7 billion (2.7bn euros) last year, driven by a four-percent rise in the volume of sales, FIFA said on Wednesday.

Global football's governing body said that its Transfer Matching System handled a total of 12,309 cross-border deals involving male professional players, underlining the rosiness of the market.

The data was gathered in FIFA's Global Transfer Market report, which is now into its third edition.

"The report provides a unique insight into the patterns and trends that have developed in the international transfer market over the 2013 calendar year from a national, regional and global perspective," FIFA said.

"This includes compelling analysis of market activity and mobility patterns, transfer fee spending, player characteristics and the involvement of club intermediaries in player transfers."

With a total of 1,402 transfers, Brazil remained the most active market for both incoming and outgoing players.

Last year was marked by Real Madrid's September purchase of Wales international Gareth Bale from English club Tottenham for a reported world record fee of over 100 million euros.

That beat the previous record, also set by Real when they bought Cristiano Ronaldo from Manchester United for 94 million euros in 2009.

But despite Real's outlay for 24-year-old Bale, it was English clubs that spent the most on transfers in 2013, with their combined $913 million representing a quarter of the total.

Commissions to agents involved in transfers rose by 30 percent, although the actual number of deals involving such intermediaries dropped to 14 percent from 17 percent in 2012.

The data also showed that the average age of players transferred internationally was 25 years and 3 months.

FIFA's figures also showed that transfer activity for the first two weeks of this year was slacker than in 2013.

A total of 290 players were transferred between January 1 and 13, compared with 352 in the same period last year.

David Moyes offers captaincy to Wayne Rooney in bid to keep him at Manchester United F.C.

Manchester United manager David Moyes is ready to make striker Wayne Rooney the club's next captain if he commits to a new 78 million-pound deal and finishes his top-flight career at Old Trafford. Rooney has also been given privileged access to Manchester United's transfer targets and rebuilding plans in a bid to keep him at the club.

London:  Manchester United manager David Moyes has offered captaincy to striker Wayne Rooney, who has only 18 months left on his current contract, with a staggering 78 million-pound deal in a bid to seal his stay for the team.

Juan Mata has already been captured from Chelsea in a 37 million pounds club record deal and is expected to be the first signing in a 200 million pounds transformation of the fading Premier League champions, Express.co.uk reports.

United's hierarchy have also opened talks with Rooney's representative Paul Stretford over a new long-term deal likely to make him the Premier League's best paid player on more than 300,000 pounds a week, giving him parity with La Liga superstars Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi, the report added.

In a bid to convince Rooney that his future should be at United, Moyes is understood to have offered the striker captaincy next season and remind him that he is only 42 goals from overtaking Sir Bobby Charlton as the club's all-time record scorer. Current skipper Nemanja Vidic, his deputy Patrice Evra and Rio Ferdinand are all set to leave this summer, while longest-serving player Ryan Giggs is likely to retire to concentrate on coaching duties.

That will leave Rooney, who will be 29 in October, as one of United's senior statesmen and in line for the armband. Rooney has also been given privileged access to United's transfer targets and rebuilding plans to convince him that his future lies at Old Trafford.

The efforts taken with Rooney by Moyes are in marked contrast with Alex Ferguson, who told the striker that it "was none of his (Rooney's) business who we should have gone for" when the player questioned the club's ambitions in October 2010 and criticised the United manager for failing to sign Mesut Ozil. Under Moyes, he has the chance to sign the largest contract for an English footballer and, at 28, probably to see out his career at Old Trafford as a senior figure.

Copa del Rey: Jese strike vs Espanyol sees Real Madrid into semis

Madrid: Real Madrid eased into the semi-finals of the Copa del Rey with a 1-0 win over Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday to progress 2-0 on aggregate.

Jese Rodriguez got the only goal of the game after just eight minutes as Madrid set a club record by not conceding for the eighth consecutive game.

Espanyol keeper Kiko Casilla managed to keep the score down as he frustrated Cristiano Ronaldo on a number of occasions.

However, it was to no avail as the visitors couldn't find a way through and ended with 10 men after Victor Sanchez was sent off late on for two bookable offences.

Real boss Carlo Ancelotti praised the excellent start to 2014 made by his side's central defenders as they sealed an eighth win in January without conceding a single goal.

"I think that the system gives us confidence. We have good defensive balance because the whole team works to recover the ball quickly and the central defenders have been playing at a very high level."

Real will now face Atletico Madrid or Athletic Bilbao in the last four with city rivals Atletico taking a 1-0 advantage into their second leg against the Basques on Wednesday.

Los Blancos also face high-flying Athletic in the league on Sunday and Ancelotti insisted that despite Jese netting the winner in the absence of the injured Gareth Bale, the Welshman will start at San Mames if he is fit.

"If Bale is fine then he will play, but that is not to say that Jese isn't another option because he is very dangerous at the moment.

"I don't care who we meet (in the next round) because both teams are in very good form. We all know everything about Atletico Madrid, but Athletic are playing very well too and it will be a very difficult and important tie."

Jese continued his case for more first team action as he confidently fired them ahead after being found by a fine long-range ball by Xabi Alonso.

Casilla could have done better on the goal, but he more than redeemed himself for the rest of the half as he made a series of saves, most notably from Ronaldo and Angel di Maria.

The visitors began to provide a threat of their own towards the end of the half and Pizzi was unlucky to see his sweetly-struck volley fly over the bar a minute before the break.

Casilla denied Ronaldo once more with another excellent stop at the beginning of the second period.

However, it was Real goalkeeper Iker Casillas who made the headlines in the second-half as he broke another club record by extending his own personal run without conceding a goal past 11 hours.

And any doubt over the result of the tie was ended when Sanchez was shown a second yellow card for handball 13 minutes from time.

Manchester United F.C. coach David Moyes enthused by Juan Mata's winning entrance

David Moyes was able to give club-record signing Juan Mata a debut in the 2-0 win over Cardiff City on Tuesday and strikers Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney both returned from injuries against the Welsh club.

Manchester: Manchester United manager David Moyes believes that the options he now has available in his squad will guarantee an improvement in his team's results.

Moyes was able to give club-record signing Juan Mata a debut in the 2-0 win over Cardiff City on Tuesday and strikers Robin van Persie and Wayne Rooney both returned from injuries against the Welsh club.

Van Persie had been absent since December 10 and Rooney had not featured since January 1, while the duo have started just seven of United's 23 Premier League matches together.

Mata's last appearance for Chelsea came in their 3-0 win at Southampton on New Year's Day and Moyes admits that all three of his first-choice forward players may have to top up their fitness during matches.

Rooney came on for Van Persie just after the hour against Cardiff, with Mata playing behind the main striker until he was taken off with five minutes remaining at Old Trafford.

But Moyes, who refused to give an update on the progress of Rooney's contract talks, has suggested he can use Mata off either flank in order to keep his two main strikers in the side.

"We'll get used to Juan and he'll get used to us," the United manager said. "It was good to get him and Robin together and we'll use Juan in different positions.

"I can play him in any role -- off the left or the right allows me to keep Robin and Wayne as a partnership, and he's also capable of playing 10 as well.

"I hope we'll play better, that would be the first thing, and we hope to create more chances and play better at Old Trafford, where we haven't been able to take our opportunities.

"Juan did really well and created some good openings for us. He's not played much for the last month and Wayne only started football training on Monday.

"The results with them will get much better and we need to get them in the right physical condition. They're in need of match practice and fitness and they'll need to get that in the game situation."

Van Persie registered his eighth league goal of the season after just six minutes before Ashley Young cut in from the left and scored United's second just before the hour to leave them six points off the Champions League places.

Moyes admits he is in a brighter mood as he prepares for a run of Premier League matches against Stoke City, Fulham, Arsenal and Crystal Palace, but the champions are still some distance from where he wants them to be.

"I want to be more convincing, I want to win better and play much better," he said.

"Don't think because we have won I have got a smile and am happy. I'm happy because we have got the three points, but for where I want to go and the vision I have got for how I want my team to go, I have got a long way to go."

Cardiff remain bottom of the Premier League table, but new manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes his side have shown that they can pull out of trouble in their next few matches.

Solskjaer has completed the signings of Kenwyne Jones from Stoke and Fabio da Silva from United and is also close to a loan deal for United winger Wilfried Zaha.

Cardiff now face consecutive league matches against Norwich City, Swansea City, Aston Villa and Hull City, and Solskjaer believes the sequence of games represents an opportunity for his side.

"Against Arsenal, (Manchester) City and United, no one expected us to take much, but now we're in a different position," said the former United star.

"This month, with the home games we've got, it will be an important month. We've seen the team develop, but now it's about results and not performances.

"Hopefully Kenwyne Jones and Wilfried Zaha will give us some more oomph in the final third."

EPL: Arsenal F.C. boss Arsene Wenger worried over injury woes

French midfielder Mathieu Flamini will be suspended for at least three matches, ruling him out of Sunday's meeting with Crystal Palace and the clashes against Liverpool and Manchester United, after collecting a red card in the 2-2 draw at Southampton on Tuesday.

Southampton:  Arsene Wenger acknowledged he is facing mounting midfield problems as Arsenal enter a decisive stage in the campaign.

French midfielder Mathieu Flamini will be suspended for at least three matches, ruling him out of Sunday's meeting with Crystal Palace and the clashes against Liverpool and Manchester United, after collecting a red card in the 2-2 draw at Southampton on Tuesday.

And the Arsenal manager revealed Aaron Ramsey has suffered a set-back in his recovery from a thigh problem that forced the Wales midfielder to miss the trip to St Mary's Stadium.

The draw meant Arsenal missed out on the chance to move four points clear at the top of the Premier League table and could head into the next round of fixtures in third place if Manchester City beat Tottenham on Wednesday and Chelsea secure a two-goal margin of victory over West Ham on the same day.

Ramsey is expected to at least miss the visit of Palace and Wenger said: "He is out for longer than expected because he had a little set-back in training on Tuesday so I couldn't bring him here.

"It's the same muscle, but faded again. So we have to be cautious when we bring him back."

Wenger agreed the loss of the two players would stretch his midfield resources, but he refused to condemn Flamini, who was dismissed in the 80th minute for a two-footed challenge on Morgan Schneiderlin.

"Look we have to see it again, to me it looked harsh. He got the ball," Wenger said.

"At some stage we all have all the feet off the ground. If you say every time a guy makes two-footed tackle its red, he deserved a red.

"If you say it was a violent tackle, I would say no. I don't know, the referee made the decision and we have to cope with it."

Arsenal were forced to come back after falling behind to Jose Fonte's 21st minute header, taking the lead with goals from Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla within seven minutes of the restart.

Adam Lallana quickly equalised for Southampton but Wenger insisted this was a valuable point gained.

"I wouldn't say it was a very bad performance," he said. "It was a very good football game. Southampton deserve credit.

"I don't complain about the quality of our game. We went down to 10 men and we at least went home with a point.

"You want three points in every game. But Southampton is a difficult place to come to and when you look overall it can happen you can get only one point away from home."

Mauricio Pochettino, the Southampton manager, praised his team's display.

"I thought the team was outstanding. I thought we played sensational football," he said.

"The second half we didn't start too well, conceded two goals, but we showed great character to get back level so quickly."

Like Wenger, Pochettino insisted he didn't get a clear view of the sending off.

"It's hard to say from my position on the pitch. But Flamini's sending off didn't affect the outcome of the game," he said.

"It didn't change what Arsenal deserved to get out of the game and it didn't affect what we should have got from the game."

Liverpool F.C. rout Everton in derby, boost top-four bid

Liverpool: Daniel Sturridge's brace handed Liverpool the Merseyside bragging rights with a 4-0 victory over Everton in the Premier League on Tuesday that maintained their Anfield derby dominance.

Everton have not won at Liverpool since 1999 and the 222nd meeting between the two sides -- both previously unbeaten in the league in 2014 -- was effectively over by half-time, with Liverpool three goals up.

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers said in his programme notes that this derby had "double significance", with vital points in the race to qualify for the Champions League at stake in addition to local pride.

But the Northern Irishman could probably not have envisaged the clinical manner in which his team would blow Roberto Martinez's men away, with a double from Sturridge and one each for captain Steven Gerrard and Luis Suarez.

England striker Sturridge could even afford to miss a penalty as fourth-place Liverpool put four points between themselves and Everton in the Premier League table.

Liverpool made three changes as Simon Mignolet replaced Brad Jones in goal, Jon Flanagan returned for Martin Kelly at right-back, and Raheem Sterling was preferred to Victor Moses on the right flank.

Everton, meanwhile, were bolstered by the return of midfielder Ross Barkley from a broken toe.

Toffees captain Phil Jagielka had also recovered from the hamstring injury he picked up in the FA Cup victory over Stevenage and made his 200th league appearance alongside Antolin Alcaraz at the heart of the visitors' defence.

Barkley looked sharp in the opening stages and struck a swerving shot from distance that flew just over the crossbar, while Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard was called into action moments later as he pushed a Suarez shot past the post.

Sturridge opened up the Everton defence in the 18th minute as he sent Sterling clear with a searching pass, but Howard came off his line quickly and blocked the winger's effort.

The hosts' spell of pressure earned them a goal three minutes later when Suarez's corner picked out Gerrard, who escaped his marker at the near post and headed home his eighth goal in Merseyside derbies.

Everton were subsequently forced to withdraw Romelu Lukaku due to injury, although without the Belgium international they still pressed for an equaliser, as Jagielka brought a save out of Mignolet.

However, Liverpool effectively made the result certain 10 minutes before half-time as Sturridge scored twice in the space of two minutes.

The 24-year-old striker was put through on goal by playmaker Philippe Coutinho in the 33rd minute and kept his composure to lift the ball over the advancing Howard.

Moments later the hosts added a third when Kolo Toure's long ball found Sturridge and with Howard off his line, the England man cleverly lobbed the ball over the American international and into the unguarded net.

Everton initially responded positively after half-time, with Mignolet forced to palm away a Leon Osman shot, but Liverpool remained hungry for goals and added a fourth five minutes into the second half.

Suarez dispossessed Jagielka just inside the Everton half and powered towards goal before coolly slotting past the exposed Howard.

Howard's misery continued when a penalty was given against him by referee Martin Atkinson for a foul on Sterling, but Sturridge, on a hat-trick, struck the spot-kick over the bar and into the Kop.

Suarez was angry with Sturridge just after the hour-mark when his strike partner selfishly went for goal from a difficult angle rather than square the ball across goal.

Everton briefly flickered into life with 15 minutes left when Steven Naismith crossed for Osman, but Mignolet snuffed out the danger.

English Premier League: Manchester United F.C. and Liverpool register wins, Arsenal slip

As Manchester United beat Cardiff City 2-0, EPL leaders Arsenal spurned an opportunity to move four points clear after drawing 2-2 at Southampton, but Liverpool tightened their grip on fourth place with a superb 4-0 defeat of derby rivals Everton.

London: Manchester United's record signing Juan Mata enjoyed a winning debut on Tuesday as his new club recorded a 2-0 victory at home to Cardiff City in the Premier League.

Leaders Arsenal, meanwhile, spurned an opportunity to move four points clear after drawing 2-2 at Southampton, but Liverpool tightened their grip on fourth place with a superb 4-0 defeat of derby rivals Everton.

Mata started the game at Old Trafford, three days after making a £37.1 million ($61.2 million, 44.8 million euros) move from Chelsea, as former United striker Ole Gunnar Solskjaer returned to his old stomping ground as Cardiff manager.

Last season's top scorer Robin van Persie was also included in United's starting line-up, after seven weeks out with a thigh strain, and the Dutch striker broke the deadlock in the sixth minute.

Mata found Ashley Young with a raking pass and when his cross was headed against the bar by Antonio Valencia, Van Persie headed in at the second attempt after his initial header was parried by goalkeeper David Marshall.

Young added a fine second in the 59th minute, cutting in from the left flank and arrowing a drive into the bottom-right corner, before Wayne Rooney made his return from injury as a substitute for Van Persie.

United manager David Moyes was left to reflect on a satisfactory night, saying: "We kept a clean sheet, scored a couple of goals, got a couple of players back from injury, and gave Juan Mata his debut."

Mata, who claimed an assist for Young's goal, told the BBC: "The win was very important for the team. It was very exciting for me. The fans are unbelievable. The lads welcomed me very well."

On United's chances of a top-four finish, he added: "We will try until the end. We will never give up."

United, who had lost three of their previous five home league games, remain six points below the Champions League places, but they inched to within 12 points of Arsenal after the London club's slip-up at St Mary's.

Bidding to move four points clear of second-place Manchester City, Arsenal fell behind in the 21st minute when centre-back Jose Fonte headed in a left-wing cross from Luke Shaw.

The visitors sprang to life early in the second half, equalising through Olivier Giroud's clever back-heel and going ahead when Santi Cazorla drilled home, only for Adam Lallana to sweep in an equaliser two minutes later.

Arsenal's push for a late winner was undermined when midfielder Mathieu Flamini was sent off for a studs-up lunge at Morgan Schneiderlin.

Arsene Wenger's side are now at risk from City, who will take over at the top if they win at Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday, while Chelsea could draw level with Arsenal if they win at home to West Ham United.

Reflecting on the matches awaiting his side's rivals, Arsenal manager Wenger said: "They have difficult games as well, and we took at least a point.

"It's not enough but considering the situation at half-time, we have to be content with it."

Liverpool moved three points clear of fifth-place Spurs and four points above sixth-place Everton with a memorable 4-0 victory in a one-sided Merseyside derby at Anfield.

Steven Gerrard's 21st-minute header from Luis Suarez's corner broke the deadlock and a quick-fire brace from Daniel Sturridge put the game beyond Everton before half-time.

The England striker finished coolly from Philippe Coutinho's through ball in the 33rd minute before deftly lobbing Everton goalkeeper Tim Howard from the edge of the area two minutes later.

Suarez raced clear to add a fourth early in the second half, while Sturridge squandered an opportunity to complete his hat-trick by blazing a penalty over the crossbar.

"It's a massive victory over rivals close to us," said Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers.

"If you look at Everton, they've only conceded 11 goals away from home before tonight (Tuesday) and for us to get four and to maybe have had a few more is very pleasing."

France midfielder Yohan Cabaye, who is reported to be on the verge of a move to Paris Saint-Germain, was absent for Newcastle United as Alan Pardew's side recorded a 0-0 draw at Norwich City.

Both sides finished with 10 men after Newcastle striker Loic Remy and Norwich midfielder Bradley Johnson were shown straight red cards following a late altercation.

Goals from Jonjo Shelvey and Chico Flores gave Swansea City a 2-0 win at home to relegation-threatened Fulham, while improving Crystal Palace climbed to 14th after an early Jason Puncheon goal saw them beat Hull City 1-0.

'Happy' Samuel Eto'o may stay at Chelsea: Jose Mourinho

London:  Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho said on Tuesday that Samuel Eto'o may remain at the club next season, despite reports he could return to Spain when his contract expires in June.

Mourinho would like to keep the 32-year-old former Mallorca and Barcelona striker, but he says that no final decision will be taken by player or club until nearer the end of the current campaign.

With Fernando Torres out for two more weeks with a knee injury, Eto'o has become the London club's principal striker at a decisive phase in the season.

And the Chelsea manager said: "We have a very trustful relationship with him.

"He's the kind of guy that, with his career, he feels very free and very comfortable making decisions just for himself. He feels good, feels happy.

"He wants to play for titles. He decided to come here to the Premier League to Chelsea, so Samuel is enjoying his career until the end.

"We'll see what he wants to do at the end of the season. Maybe he wants to go to Mallorca, as he promised his son. Maybe he wants to stay with us, or go and finish his career at Inter (Milan).

"He doesn't need titles, he doesn't need money."

Asked if he had ruled out Eto'o staying put, Mourinho said: "Of course not. He's a big player, even if he doesn't score 25 goals, because his contribution to the team is very high. We are happy."

Cameroon star Eto'o has struck eight goals since joining Chelsea following a spell at Russian club Anzhi Makhachkala, including a hat-trick in the recent 3-1 victory over Manchester United.

Chelsea will continue their Premier League title challenge when West Ham United visit Stamford Bridge on Wednesday.

New signing Mohamed Salah, the 21-year-old Egyptian winger, will not be available following his arrival from Basel as Mourinho's side seek a sixth successive league win.

Chelsea trailed leaders Arsenal by two points ahead of the mid-week matches, but Mourinho believes that it is too early to describe his team as potential champions.

"We are improving a lot -- the team, the players -- so the future is good," he said. "We are going in a good direction. But this season? I don't think so."

He added: "I expect to win the next match. We go like this. We try and expect to win the next match.

"It doesn't matter if the next match is against a Championship (second-tier) team in the FA Cup, or a Champions League match against a giant. We are going always to try and win the next match.

"But what we need, as a guarantee, is the evolution of the team. This must be a guarantee. If we see that our team is the same or even worse than it was in September, that's a big problem.

"If we see that players like (Eden) Hazard, Oscar and Willian and (Cesar) Azpilicueta are not better now than they were six months ago, that's a big problem. These are things that we need. It's compulsory.

"The evolution of the team and players is compulsory. Results are a consequence of the evolution. We are doing fine. Let's see what happens. But we always want to win the next match. That's our culture.

"You will ask me about playing Manchester City next (on February 3); a stadium and a team where everyone loses (by) four, five or six. I'll tell you we want to win."

Andres Iniesta back for Barcelona

Andres Iniesta had suffered bruising on his left knee during Barca's 0-0 draw with Atletico Madrid.

Madrid:  Barcelona midfielder Andres Iniesta will make his return after two weeks out with a knee injury in the Spanish Cup against Levante on Wednesday, according to his club.

The 94-time capped Spain international suffered bruising on his left knee during Barca's 0-0 draw with Atletico Madrid on January 11, and has since missed two La Liga two King's Cup matches.

"We have seen Andres through his rehabilitation," coach Gerardo Martino said Tuesday, 24 hours ahead of the quarter-final second leg fixture against Levante, Barca having won the first leg 4-1.

"He needs to have some game time because his injury lasted a little longer than expected.

"Two weeks have passed since the match against Atletico Madrid and it seemed to us a good time and a good match to allow him to come back into the team."

His return from injury will allow Martino to rest much-used midfielder Xavi, with Sergio Busquets and Brazilian full-back Dani Alves also given the night off.

Lionel Messi to Paris Saint-Germain? No way, say Barcelona

Barcelona president Josep Maria Bartomeu has said four-time world footballer of the year Lionel Messi is not leaving the club and wants to end his career at Santiago Bernabeu.

Barcelona's newly-appointed president Josep Maria Bartomeu has rubbished reports that their star striker Lionel Messi will leave Bernabeu at the end of the season for a possible tie-up with French league giants Paris Saint-Germain. "Lionel Messi is so happy here that I doubt he wants to leave Barcelona. He is a player that was practically born here because he arrived when he was just 13 and I have always heard him say that he wants to finish his career here," Bartomeu said.

Bartomeu has also revealed that the club is planning to discuss a new contract with the Argentine. "The club will sit down and negotiate a new contract. We will do what we have to, to ensure he's the best-paid player," the Barcelona president added.

Messi's father and agent Jorge though called PSG's offer "an honour" but maintained that his son is going nowhere. "I have heard about those rumours and I don't know where it came from," Jorge Messi told L'Equipe.

"It is an honour to know PSG could think about him. But I repeat it is not a subject we want to think about now. There is nothing so far. Lionel is a Barcelona player, where he is under contract for several years (until 2018)," he added.

The four-time Ballon d'Or winner has struggled to match his last season's goal-scoring ability, when he netted 60 goals in 50 appearances. Messi has scored 18 goals so far this season, although he has provided 36 assists in 20 appearances. He last scored in the Spanish top-flight in September before a hamstring injury sidelined him for five weeks. The 26-year-old has played three matches since his return from injury but has failed to score for the La Liga champions.

However, the striker has found support in Barca coach Gerardo Martino. "He can do everything. If he succeeds in other facets of his game, it doesn't matter if he scores," Martino said.
